JOCK TALK: Gear up for one of the season’s biggest events at Western Speedway

From lacrosse to baseball to cricket there’s plenty of action this week on the West Shore

Racing fans will head to Western Speedway for one of the premier events of the season this weekend, the Strawberry Cup. CAMRA Vintage Modifieds return to take spectators back in time as drivers battle it out like it’s 1975. The lightning-fast winged sprint cars make their second appearance of the season, and the Wilroc non-wing sprint cars round out the racing action, competing for the Billy Foster Memorial Trophy Friday, before Saturday’s Strawberry Cup. Take in two-wheeled motorsports with the Westshore Motocross’ Tuesday evening summer series. Sign-up begins at 5:30 p.m., with practice at 6:30 and racing at 7.

Turning to regional lacrosse, the Victoria Shamrocks return home to an action-packed arena on Friday, June 16 when they host the New Westminster Salmonbellies at 7:30 p.m. in The Q Centre.

The Jr. Shamrocks hope to fill the gap this week by hosing the Jr. Salmonbellies on Sunday, June 11 at 2 p.m. at The Q Centre.

Div. 1 Westshore cricket returns Sunday, June 11 when Metchosin hosts Oak Bay at 12 p.m. at the pitch at the Metchosin municipal grounds. In Div. 2 mid-week play, Metchosin heads to Beacon Hill Park Tuesday to face the Sticky Wicket team.

The next generation of West Shore ball players will pitch in for some friendly competition this weekend when Triangle Baseball Club hosts the 2017 Novice/Tadpole Tournament at the Juan de Fuca lower fields. Come enjoy some time at the park and cheer on these young athletes!

In regional, high-performance baseball, the Victoria Junior Eagles host the Coquitlam Redlegs in a Saturday doubleheader at Lambrick Park. First pitches go at 12:05 and 2:35 p.m.

And in Victoria Harbourcats baseball, the team returns for a two-game home stand against the Port Angeles Lefties Monday, June 12 and Tuesday, June 13. Games both nights go at 6:35 p.m.

Registration has opened for the sixth annual Bear Mountain Men’s Amateur golf tournament, July 8 and 9. Registration includes a July 7 practice round on the Valley Course, and one round each on the Mountain and Valley courses, plus power cart, range balls, meals after both rounds, gifts and prizes. And for those wanting to catch some of the best in action, head to the Bayview CardTronics Open, continuing through the weekend at Uplands Golf Club. Supporting the Children’s Health Foundation of Vancouver Island, the second round opens today (Friday, June 9) at 7:30 a.m. with the third and fourth rounds continuing Saturday and Sunday. Tee-off both weekend mornings is at 8:30 a.m. Tickets are $10 for a day pass – for more information visit bpcopen.ca.
