Sid Tobias elected mayor of View Royal

Tobias defeated incumbent David Screech by 236 votes

View Royal has joined many other Greater Victoria communities in choosing change in council, as challenger Sid Tobias has defeated David Screech to be the next mayor.

According to preliminary polls, Tobias has been elected with 1,291 votes to Screech’s 1,055.

Joining Tobias on council will be Damian Kowalewich (1,677), John Rogers (1,601), Alison MacKenzie (1,591), Ron Mattson (1,553), Gery Lemon (1,508), and Don Brown (1,421).

Judy Estrin was the only candidate for councillor who failed to get elected, earning 1,310 votes.

In 2018, according to Civic Info BC, the estimated eligible voter turnout for the Town of View Royal was 25.3 per cent, which was 10.3 per cent lower than the average B.C. municipal turnout of 35.6 per cent. Preliminary data Saturday (Oct. 15) night did not include info on voter turnout for this year’s election.

Screech was re-elected mayor in 2018 by acclamation.
