Black Press Media reader captures moment tree fell on hydro lines

A dramatic video of the moment a tree fell onto hydro lines, sparking and smoking as it strained the wires, was shared by Black Press Media reader @JVicPro Saturday morning.

The tree, at the corner of Treanor Avenue and Kyle Place, shut down traffic in the area, waiting for BC Hydro crews to arrive.

BC Hydro reported at noon that there were about 63,000 customers without power in the Lower Mainland, Fraser Valley, Sunshine Coast and on Vancouver Island – Greater Victoria being one of the hardest hit areas.

BC Hydro crews will continue to work throughout the day to restore power.

The wind warning in Greater Victoria continues Saturday as strong Arctic outflow winds hit the area with gusts up to 90 km/hour.

The strong winds will persist on Saturday and are expected to diminish on Sunday morning.

Ferries and flights have also been cancelled on Vancouver Island due to the high winds.
