A Victoria man has been arrested and charged in connection with a home invasion in Nanaimo.

Ashley Baird, 33, was arrested in Victoria Tuesday after allegedly committing a violent home invasion in Nanaimo on April 20.

According to police, Baird allegedly forced his way into a residence in the 700 block of Haliburton Street, brandished a shotgun, tied up the residents and then assaulted and threatened them.

“The public was not informed of this incident as it was not a random event,” said Const. Gary O’Brien, Nanaimo RCMP spokesman. “Baird was identified early on in the investigation and the residence and its occupants are known to the Nanaimo RCMP with ties to criminal activity.”

Investigators travelled to Victoria and arrested Baird with the help from the Victoria Police Strike Force and general duty officers.

At the time of his arrest, police allege Baird was in possession of 85 grams of suspected crystal methamphetamine, 57 grams of suspected heroin/fentanyl and an imitation BB handgun.

Following his arrest, Baird’s residence was secured and a search warrant was executed. During the search, police also found a shotgun and zap straps, both believed to have been used during the home invasion.

With Baird in custody, a judicial bail hearing was held Wednesday when he was formally charged with robbery, unlawful confinement, numerous firearms charges and possession for the purpose of trafficking.

Baird is being held in custody until his next court appearance Monday (May 1) in Nanaimo.
