Veteran Victoria police officers receive special honour

Police Exemplary Service Medal recognizes long and exceptional service

Thirteen Victoria police officers were recognized Thursday for their long careers in law enforcement.

Chief Const. Jamie Graham presented the officers with the Police Exemplary Service Medal to mark their 20 or 30 years on the job. The award, created in 1983, is given to officers who served in an exemplary manner, complete with good conduct, industry and efficiency, according to the Governor General of Canada’s website.

“Today we are honouring these officers and citizens for going beyond the call of duty,” Graham said in a statement.

To be eligible for the award an officer must have 20 years of full-time service with a Canadian municipal or provincial police service.

Thirty-year medals went to Const. Doug Abrahamson, Staff Sgt. Dave Bown and constables Brent Burger, Greg Chiarot, Neil Lundin and Bill Roberts.

The 20-year medal was presented to sergeants Sean Plater, Matt Waterman and Alex Yelovatz, as well as constables Franco Bruschetta, Ken Fetherston, Jason Ince and Mark MacPhail.
