The beer tasting scene may get a little bigger; Vancouver Island Brewing is looking to expand its current tasting room.

In an application submitted to the City of Victoria, general manager David Nicholls asked the city to consider a rezoning that would allow for more seating and for staff to serve larger glasses of beer.

Currently, the brewery is limited to serving guests 12 ounces of beer in the form of four ounce flights.

“With a zoning and license change, we will be able to serves guest a full 12 ounce glass, or allow them to taste all beers made at our brewery,” Nicholls wrote. “It will be a true tasting room.”

It would not require any construction or renovations to the building, but simply rearrange the space. These changes would create seating for 40 patrons, and room for 86 standing guests and staff if the space were rented out for an event.

Nicholls argued that while the building is shared with office space, any increase in visitors would happen in the evening and on weekends, and that the location of the brewery is along major bus routes. Hours would not change from its regular 9 a.m. to 11 p.m.

The brewery will offer some light snacks made by local businesses to follow lounge endorsement requirements, but the main goal of the business will still remain manufacturing.

The brewery would also offer non-alcoholic, gluten free and kosher drinking options.

The application must now be considered by council and put forward to public hearing.
