A 24-year-old man is in custody after allegedly stabbing his father late Saturday night.

The injured man, bleeding heavily, was able to flee his Saanich home and seek help at Berwick House, a nearby retirement home in the Elk Lake area.

Police called out the Greater Victoria emergency response team because they thought the son had barricaded himself in the family home.

The special police unit surrounded the house for three hours until a uniformed police officer spotted a man running in the area.

He turned out to be the son suspected of assaulting his father after an argument turned violent.

The man, who could face charges of attempted murder, had fled the house before police arrived.

His bail hearing was expected via video on Sunday.

The father is expected to recover from his injuries.
