A federal byelection date for the vacant Nanaimo-Ladysmith riding likely won’t be announced for weeks.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau just announced a byelection date for three vacant federal ridings, but the Nanaimo-Ladysmith riding wasn’t one of them.

Speaking with the News Bulletin, a spokeswoman with the Prime Minister’s Office, said Trudeau hasn’t set a date for the Nanaimo riding and won’t do so until after a provincial byelection in the city concludes because he doesn’t want there to be any confusion.

A provincial byelection for the Nanaimo riding will take place Jan. 30 after the seat was vacated last year by Leonard Krog, who is now the city’s mayor.

Following Krog’s departure, Sheila Malcolmson vacated her seat as member of Parliament for Nanaimo-Ladysmith in order to run in the upcoming provincial byelection.

Elections Canada stated earlier this week that a federal byelection will be required, that a date must be announced between Jan. 18 and July 6, and that the byelection must be held at least 36 days after is announced.

Malcolmson reiterated yesterday that a vacant MP’s seat doesn’t necessarily need to be filled before the general election in fall 2019.
