Multiple drivers go off Trans-Canada Highway under wintry conditions in Greater Victoria

One car was involved in a rollover crash on Highway 1 on Tuesday morning

Drivers are being warned to slow down after several early Tuesday morning crashes along the Trans-Canada Highway.

Two vehicles went off the road and into the grass divider on Highway 1 less than 200 metres apart, between the Colwood and Langford exits on Dec. 28.

One car rolled onto its side, with RCMP and firefighters responding, just before 8 a.m.. The other car appeared to have slid backwards off the road.

West Shore RCMP Cpl. Don Gaven said there were no signifcant injuries in any of the crashes.

“We’d just urge people to be mindful of the icy conditions and to slow down,” he said.

New Boxing Day temperature lows were set in Greater Victoria. In the Victoria Harbour, Esquimalt and Gonzales Point areas, a new record of -8.7 C overtook the old record of -5.4 C set in 1996.

A winter travel advisory that had been in place on Boxing Day was lifted by Drive BC earlier, and hasn’t been reinstated, but Saanich police took to Twitter to warn of wintry conditions. They also reminded drivers to clear windshields properly, adding one man had been ticketed on Monday for failing to do so.

Snow is still in the forecast for the next few nights, with temperatures set to remain below freezing until Thursday, when the high will be 1 C.
