The body of a 67-year-old Saanich woman was discovered Monday morning on a walking trail near Prior Lake, part of Thetis Lake Regional Park.

Maria Huyben was last seen June 27. Her car was found parked at Thetis Lake on the same day. Family members told police she was “distraught” when they last saw her.

Saanich police are investigating the death, which is not being treated as suspicious.

“She likely has been there for some time, likely since she went missing,” said Sgt. Dean Jantzen.

After her car was found, rescue crews scoured the surrounding area over a two-day period until the search was called off.

An autopsy on the remains is scheduled for later this week.
