It’s been a year since the death of West Shore RCMP officer Const. Sarah Beckett.

To mark the day, officers will don their red serge Wednesday in front of the detachment in Langford and welcome the public to pay their respects. At noon an RCMP chaplain will say a few words and a wreath will be laid on the memorial plaque for Beckett in the garden.

The married mother of two was killed in the early hours of April 5, 2016, after her police cruiser was struck in the Goldstream Avenue and Peatt Road intersection. She was 32.

The man facing five charges in connection to the crash, Kenneth Jacob Fenton of Langford, is due in court on Thursday (April 6). His appearance has been rescheduled multiple times, including for the release of a report from B.C.’s Independent Investigations Office on the crash. Files relating to that investigation have not been made public.

However, in February the IIO filed a report to Crown counsel for consideration of charges against an officer – not Beckett – that was involved in the events leading up to the crash. At this time, Crown has neither filed charges or released a statement clearing the officer in question.
