Greentree Medical Dispensary on Granderson Road in Langford was shut down Tuesday for contradiction of City bylaws and the federal Criminal Code

A short-lived medical marijuana operation in Langford was shut down by West Shore RCMP on Tuesday.

Having opened yesterday in a nondescript office complex at 688 Granderson Rd., just steps away from the RCMP detachment, Greentree Medical Dispensary was closed after RCMP officers conducted a compliance check. Police seized a quantity of marijuana after observing "possible offences under the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act," according to a news release.

While the City of Victoria, policed by a municipal department, has turned a blind eye to the operation of dispensaries given the federal government's promise to legalize and regulate marijuana, jurisdictions policed by RCMP continue to operate under the Criminal Code as it remains written.

"Businesses and/or individuals operating in contravention of the CDSA and Health Canada regulations may be subject to investigation and criminal charges in accordance with Canadian laws," the RCMP release stated.

Langford Mayor Stew Young said to his knowledge, the operators did not have any discussions with the City of Langford or take out a business licence before opening.
