The court date for the accused in the April 2016 death of former Sooke resident RCMP Const. Sarah Beckett has been delayed until May 18 on the request of Crown counsel.
Langford resident Kenneth Jacob Fenton is facing five charges resulting from the crash, including impaired driving causing death, following an early morning crash at the intersection of Peatt Road and Goldstream Avenue in Langford. He was due to appear in Western Communities court Thursday.
Fenton has yet to enter a plea and has had his case delayed numerous times since being charged last September.
He wasn’t present on April 6, the last time the case was heard, but both his lawyer Dale Marshall and Crown counsel indicated that positive talks had taken place and the two sides were working on an agreed statement of facts.
“The matter has been adjourned…to allow Crown and defense to conclude resolution discussions,” said Dan McLaughlin, communications counsel at the B.C. Prosecution Service.
McLaughlin indicated that avoiding a trial is “certainly one of the options” given these discussions and that the Crown is optimistic the May 18 date will give the sides enough time to reach a resolution.
