The catalytic converter was stolen off of one of the Langford Royal Canadian Legion’s vans early Wednesday (Jan. 25) morning.
The van was parked outside the Legion Branch 91 building on Station Avenue, with the theft taking place at around 1 a.m.
“I was there but I didn’t hear it till the last minute,” said Norm Scott, president of the Langford Legion.
The van was frequently used by the Legion to help its senior members with transport to various activities, and by other community groups like the Westshore Rebels.
West Shore RCMP spokesperson Cpl. Nancy Saggar said there’s no suspect currently related to the incident. Saggar noted there was a spate of similar thefts around the end of 2022.
Recently, Sidney-North Saanich RCMP was warning people about an increase in catalytic converter theft after several incidents have seen cars stripped of their exhaust systems. Catalytic converters are commonly stolen to be sold for the metal they contain, according to a statement from Sidney-North Saanich RCMP Cpl. Andres Sanchez.
Scott said the Legion’s van is insured through the City of Langford, so he’ll have to coordinate with them before getting the van repaired. Without insurance, Scott estimated would it cost a few thousand dollars to get the van fixed.
