Five people are in custody after Sooke RCMP seized several weapons and ammunition from a vehicle in the Otter Point area.

Mounties responded to the area at about 9 p.m. Tuesday.

A 12-gauge shotgun, a semi-automatic SKS assault rifle along with magazines and ammunition, as well as other “potential weapons” including bear spray and knives were found in the car, said RCMP Staff Sgt. Jeff McArthur.

A quantity of crystal methamphetamine, heroin, cocaine, marijuana, and numerous cellphones were also recovered.

Police seized between 15 to 20 items.

A 34-year-old man from Sooke, two men, age 25 and 28, as well as a 26-year-old woman from Langford remain in custody.

It appeared that the group were target shooting in the area, and “honing their firearms skills,” McArthur said.

The men are known to police, one of whom has a lifetime firearms prohibition from previous convictions, while another is subject to bail conditions which includes a ban from possessing weapons.

Police are seeking charges of possession of prohibited weapons and possession of controlled substances for trafficking,

McArthur said the incident doesn’t appear to have a connection to a drive-by shooting on Ella Road last week. Three men were arrested in that incident.
