Cruise ship visits record to be set at Victoria's Ogden Point

Nearly half a million passengers expected to travel on ships docking in the city this year

In 2012, Ogden Point will receive an all-time high of 229 cruise-ship visits – up from 206 last year – and approximately 476,000 passengers.

Two thirds of the ships will arrive in the early evening and depart before midnight. Victoria’s cruise visits have shifted very slightly to evening, rather than daytime, since 2008, mostly due to the Disney line, which will add Victoria to its list of ports in this coming season.

“There’s a tremendous amount of work we can do together locally with tourism and business to make it more attractive for cruise lines to stop in Victoria (for the day),” said Greater Victoria Harbour Authority CEO Curtis Grad.

Victoria is traditionally on the tail end of a seven-night Alaska cruise, he said. “Alaska is the banner element of what they’re marketing. I’d love to be in a position, five years from now, where it was being marketed as Alaska and Victoria.”
