Kitchen scraps plan gets green light
The Capital Regional District awarded two contracts to create a phased-in kitchen scraps removal program last week.
Super Save Disposal Inc. will haul the scraps, while Vantreight Farms will be responsible for receiving and processing.
The total cost is approximately $141,500 in 2013 and $498,900 in 2014, reflecting the expansion of the program.
While Saanichton-based Vantreight Farms does not own or operate an in-vessel processing facility for kitchen scraps, it has promised to be operational by Feb. 1.
Cell tower planned for Hartland landfill
Wind Mobile has been permitted to install a 70-metre cellular tower at the Hartland landfill, a move that will net the CRD $15,000 annually to lease the space.
The installation comes five years after the the CRD identified poor wireless communication signals at the landfill in a 2007 review.
Wind Mobile will install the tower in mid-2013.
Pipe upgrade helps eliminate gas
Hartland landfill will receive a $282,000 upgrade to its piping system that captures methane and other polluting gases, a necessary expense to comply with federal guidelines.
Palladian Developments received the contract and will commence work in mid-October for about one month.
New CRD website coming
The CRD will be upgrading its website to the tune of $287,000.
Focus groups concluded residents want a better user experience, including more intuitive layout and design as well as more opportunity for online engagement.
The contract is awarded to Vancouver-based FCV, whose clients include Nike, Vancouver Canucks and Vancouver Coastal Health.
