The BC Coroners Service is investigating after an Oak Bay High School student died today (April 20).

Oak Bay police and fire were called for a home on Lincoln Road Friday morning at 7:30. A 16 year old male was reported to be in medical distress, according to the Oak Bay Police Department.

“First Responders found a young male unresponsive‎. Although life saving measures were attempted, unfortunately the youth did not survive,” said Chief Constable Andy Brinton. “‎Any death involving a young person is treated as a priority and the Oak Bay Police are working closely with the BC Coroner Service to confirm the cause of death. Police forensics and investigators have been engaged in this matter. There is no reason to feel the public are at risk. Our hearts go out to the family and no further details are being provided out of respect for their privacy during this difficult time.”

The Coroners Service of British Columbia is responsible for investigating all unnatural, sudden and unexpected, unexplained or unattended deaths in the province. It makes recommendations to improve public safety and prevent death in similar circumstances.

“I can confirm we’re in the very early stages of an investigation involving a male teenager,” said Andy Watson, manager of strategic communications with the BC Coroners Service. “We’re still in the very early stages of our investigation.”

The coroner service does not confirm identities of individuals.
