‘Barking and scared:’ Victoria dog saved from rock 150-feet off shore near Dallas Road

Victoria Animal Control Services asking if anyone recognizes ‘Dingo’

Victoria police aided in the rescue of a dog stranded on a rock 150 feet off-shore near Dallas Road and Ross Bay Cemetery Saturday night.

Dingo, a black and white border collie/pit bull cross, was located “barking and scared” around 11 p.m. by two people walking along Dallas Road.

When they tried to help him, Dingo ran further out onto the rocks. They called for help and by the time police arrived, the tide had come in and Dingo was stranded on the furthest rock.

According to Victoria Animal Control Services Ltd., he was found with a President’s Choice gift card attached to his collar that read: ‘Hello My name is Dingo.”

Two Victoria police officers and senior animal control officer Ian Fraser braved the cold ocean to save him, wading into knee-deep water in the pitch black night to try and get Dingo to shore.

Eventually, using a catch pole, they were able to get Dingo onto dry land and take him into Animal Services custody. The gift card did not have any money on it.

“The dog was definitely in a precarious situation there… [he] was definitely spooked and not happy at all with his predicament,” Fraser said.

Fraser said any comments about how the dog ended up roaming the beach would be based on pure speculation, but Animal Services has posted photos of Dingo online in case he may have a family looking for him.

“Our job is to reunite the dog with his owner, we’re hoping somebody will recognize the dog,” Fraser said.

Dingo is neutered but does not have a microchip.

Anyone with information about where Dingo came from is encouraged to contact Animal Control Services at 250-414-0233.
