If your heating bills have been higher than expected this winter, or you’re noticing more dust and dirt settling around your home, it might be time for a little “spring cleaning” of your duct system.

The results offer more than easier housekeeping. Here’s why:

  1. Save Money: Ensuring your heating and cooling systems are running at top efficiency will save you money. Not only will duct cleaning reduce energy bills because the system is working more efficiently, but it will also prolong the life of your heating and cooling systems. “Cleaning your system can save you up to 30 per cent on your heating bills,” notes Andrew Simpson, owner of Victoria’s WETT-certified Aero Furnace, Duct and Chimney Cleaning.
  2. Improve air quality: “Your filter can only do so much and people and pets generate dust, dander and other dirt every day. All of that gets into the duct system and some gets into your air,” Simpson says. Duct cleaning removes that accumulated grime and prevents it from entering your home, helping ensure the best possible indoor air quality which can reduce reaction to environmental sensitivity, allergies and asthma.
  3. Improved Home Hygiene. “We’re always creating dust so there will always be dust,” Simpson says. However, removing dirt that’s hidden from view will help reduce household dust, meaning you can clean and maintain your home more quickly and easily.

It might time to call in the professionals when…

Simpson recommends a duct cleaning about every two years, but there are signs to watch for other than the calendar:

  • Have a look down your cold air returns … do you see an accumulation of dust and dirt?
  • Are you dusting more than once a week, where you weren’t before?
  • Is your furnace filter is always dirty? If you need to clean your filter every month or two, instead of annually, it’s a sign your system needs cleaning, Simpson says.
  • Is your oil furnace heat exchanger and chimney clogged with soot? Or is black soot found around the furnace?

Additionally, Simpson recommends a duct cleaning after a new build or major renovation, when the ducts can be clogged with construction materials such as wood shavings, drywall dust or carpet fibres, and when purchasing a “new-to-you” home.

“Typically you don’t know when the previous owners last had the system cleaned, so cleaning helps ensure it’s working as efficiently as possible and you’re not inhaling years of another family’s dust, dander and dirt,” Simpson says.

It’s also recommended, and sometimes required by warranty, that air ducts are cleaned after a new furnace or air conditioner is installed.

Service, using compressed air and a power-vac typically takes about two to three hours, depending on the size of the home.
