Victoria on verge of sweeping Western Lacrosse championship

Shamrocks face Langley Thunder on home turf in Colwood Friday night

The Victoria Shamrocks have taken a 3-0 lead in the Western Lacrosse Association finals against the Langley Thunder, with a chance to wrap up a provincial title at Colwood's Q Centre Friday night.

The visiting Shamrocks outscored Langley 9-2 in the second period on their way to a decisive 14-9 Game 3 win Wednesday night.

Victoria led 14-5 with nine minutes remaining, however, Langley strung together a strong closing 10 minutes. The Thunder scored four unanswered but it was too little too late with those tallies just providing a little spark for Langley entering Friday's Game 4.

Casey Wilson captured the first star of the game for the Shamrocks by scoring three goals and adding four assists. Other big performances of the night for the ‘Rocks came from; Marshal King (2G,3A), Chris Wardle (1G, 3A) and Trent DiCicco (1G, 3A). Chris Origlieri made 41 saves in the Shamrocks' net.

The Thunder led 2-1 at the midway point of the first period before the Shamrocks scored twice 30 seconds apart to take a 3-2 lead into intermission. The second period was a different story, however, as it was all Victoria.

“We didn’t have an answer; we just came up flat there in the second period, which is disappointing,” Langley coach Ian Poole said.

The Shamrocks chased Caleb Khan from the Langley net following Victoria's 10th goal midway through the contest, with Kyle Mooney finishing the contest for the Thunder.

The Shamrocks have a chance to sweep on Friday night from the Q Centre in front of their home crowd and secure the WLA crown.

Tickets are available at VictoriaShamrocks.com or in the office on Friday from noon to 4 p.m. The box office at The Q Centre opens at 4 p.m. on Friday. Game time is 6:30 p.m.
