Victoria commuters face shifting lanes, pedestrian detours on Blanshard

The work is expected to be completed by spring

Work underway on Blanshard Street in downtown Victoria means continued shifting sidewalks and travel lanes.

Through Feb.16, crews are installing new sidewalks – with pedestrian detours and altering traffic lanes – on the major Victoria thoroughfare.

Anticipated to be completed by spring, road repaving, traffic signal upgrades and new left turn lanes from View through to Yates aim to improve traffic flow.

Protected bicycle lanes, safer crosswalks and improved lighting support walking, riding and rolling. Accessibility upgrades and new accessible parking spaces will remove barriers for people visiting our downtown, and new trees and landscaping will beautify the street.

The first two weeks of February include new concrete curbs, sidewalks and medians for the Johnson-to-Yates-streets segment. Traffic could be reduced to one lane in each direction during that work.

Traffic signals could see day-long shutdowns with more details anticipated as the work is scheduled.

For Pandora Avenue to Fort Street, drivers and pedestrians can expect an increase in noise and dust with traffic down to one lane each way as crews repair the road for paving.

Primary contractor Don Mann Excavating Ltd. reminds residents to expect machinery, excavation, noise, safety equipment and temporary traffic controls around active work sites.

Working hours are typically Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. If additional weekend, holiday, or nighttime work is expected to cause significant traffic disruptions or noise, advance notice will be given.
