PHOTOS: Tributes, praise for Langford's veterans crosswalk at ceremony

The community, contractors and the city pulled out all the stops to have the tribute ready for Remembrance Day

Langford’s new veterans crosswalk was officially opened at a ceremony held on Station Avenue on Thursday (Nov. 14).

Originally planned by the City of Langford to be a ‘regular’ crosswalk, the idea to create a veterans tribute came from local resident, Dianna Seaton, inspired by a similar project in Hamilton, Ont.

A community fundraiser followed, raising around $7,000 to help pay for the crosswalk’s paint. The remainder of the cost for the paint, plus labour and related expenses, was covered by the city.

It is hoped the crossing, while serving its purpose as a safe place to cross, will also serve as a lasting tribute to Langford’s veterans for generations to come.

And the crosswalk is already having the desired effect.

Speaking at the ceremony, Coun. Colby Harder shared a touching moment of reflection she witnessed at the crossing.

“I saw a young mom with her young daughter, standing in front of the crosswalk to take a photo for grandma,” said Harder. “It was just such a heartwarming moment to see that generational knowledge be transferred over and to see something as simple as this [crosswalk] have such a great impact.”

“This is not just a crosswalk, it's a tribute to remember the veterans and their families who have sacrificed so much for our freedom,” added Mayor Scott Goodmanson, who praised the community, contractors and city staff for their work to have the crosswalk ready in time for Remembrance Day.

“I can tell you that this was no small feat, the city and contractors truly put their best foot forward to make this happen for the community,” he continued.
