Peninsula speed skater Peyton Stonehouse Smith has won a silver medal at the recent BC Short Track Championships in Abbotsford.

Over the March 3-4 weekend, Stonehouse Smith, who skates for the Peninsula Speed Skating Club, placed second overall in the Junior Women’s Performance division. She did that on a powerful skate in the 3,000 metre points race.

“Peyton won the race with such a commanding lead, she was able to lap out her competitors,” said coach Brenda Hennigar in an email to the PNR.

Stonehouse Smith’s teammate, Tori Kalniuk had to settle for sixth place overall in the Under 15 girls division. Kalyniuk had earned a silver medal at the National Long Track Championships in Quebec City in February.

Other Peninsula Speed Skating Club athletes had a solid weekend on the ice in Abbotsford. Kyle Brown was seventh and his brother Kieran was eighth overall in the Under 14 boys division.
