Sooke School District has announced who will be stepping into the shoes of current secretary-treasurer Harold Cull, who will be retiring at the end of the year after 12 years of service.
Assuming the role in January 2025 will be Brian Jonker, whose most recent role was executive director of the marine branch at the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure.
“I am beyond excited to join the Sooke School District family,” said Jonker in a news release. “I look forward to working alongside the board, leadership teams, partners and key interest holders to support students, staff and families.”
Having also served in key roles within the Ministry of Education, including executive director of independent schools and international education, Jonker’s background includes a “solid foundation in education leadership,” says the school district.
“His wealth of experience in governance, strategic planning, and capital project management will be invaluable as we continue to grow and serve our communities," said Paul Block, superintendent of the Sooke School District.
“Brian’s leadership and dedication to collaboration will ensure we remain focused on delivering our mandate and preparing the school district for the future.”
As secretary-treasurer, Jonker will oversee financial operations, strategic planning and resource management of the fastest-growing school district in British Columbia.
In October, Sooke School District said a new secondary school is "urgently needed" after exceeding its projected growth for the 2024-25 school year. Both Belmont and Royal Bay secondary schools were said to be operating over capacity.
