A 3.5-kilometre stretch of the Malahat will undergo repaving throughout October.

Travellers are being warned that repaving on the Malahat could cause delays near Greater Victoria starting later this week.

Repaving will take place during off-peak hours on the 3.5-kilometre stretch from just south of Aspen Road to the recently repaired Tunnel Hill washout site.

The ministry of transportation said the work starting after Oct. 4 will occur between 8 p.m. and 5 a.m., Sunday to Thursday each week. The province expects the work to be complete around the end of October.

"The work involves filling and repaving the existing highway lanes to keep this stretch of road safe for travel prior to the winter season," the ministry said on Tuesday.

Drivers should anticipate delays around the work area and are being encouraged to travel outside of construction hours to avoid disruptions.

The overnight work will see the roadway reduced to single-lane-alternating traffic between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m. along the stretch.
