Langford's The Outpost Board Game Cafe is offering free board game sessions on Monday, Feb. 17 between 11 a.m. and 7 p.m. for Family Day.

There’s no reason for Langford locals to be bored on Family Day weekend, with a plethora of free activities on offer.

Board games, street hockey, musical performances and free cinema screenings will make for a jam-packed holiday weekend, promises the City of Langford.

“Family Day is a special day to be present and spend time with loved ones,” said Mayor Scott Goodmanson in a news release. “The city is excited to offer a fun lineup of free activities for the community to enjoy without the expense.

“We hope this event will provide an opportunity for residents to discover new activities and create lasting memories.”

Langford Family Day events will run from Friday, Feb. 15, through to Monday, Feb. 17.

Free board game sessions will be available at the Outpost Board Game Cafe, located at 2830 Peatt Rd, on Monday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Founded by Langford brothers Joshua and Elijah Driver, the cafe has seen a rapid growth in popularity among board game enthusiasts, says the city, with a large selection of board games and puzzles for all ages.

Partnering with Cineplex Odeon Westshore Cinemas, the city is offering complimentary movie screenings of popular family movies Kung Fu Panda and Harry Potter and The Goblet of Fire.

For sports fans, the West Shore RCMP and Langford Fire Department will be teaming up to host a street hockey event at Veterans Memorial Park on Monday, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Open to all ages, the event will feature two hockey arenas for drop-in games, informational booths with giveaways and free refreshments including hot dogs, chips and juice. Participants are requested to bring their own hockey sticks.

For younger audiences, Westshore Town Centre has a variety of family-friendly activities and performances lined up, including interactive story time sessions with princesses and superheroes. There will also be magic performances by Derek ‘Magic’ Johnson and a sing-along with artist Melody Moonshaker.

While all of these events are free, the city is encouraging residents to consider donating to the Goldstream Food Bank, either at specific events that offer the opportunity to donate or online: https://goldstreamfoodbank.org/donate-food.
