Highlands Coffee House has a colourful history

Monthly event takes place this Saturday at Caleb Pike House

Highlands residents have a deep connection with music and while that is often evident in community events, there's one night a month that is circled on many residents' calendars.

Taking the stage this Saturday (March 11) at the Highlands Coffee House is Pennybrook. This duo will entertain with a modern take on old-fashioned songs and original instrumentals that feature an East Coast flair.

The Highlands Coffee House started in 1998 as a way to provide residents, young and old, a place to go once a month to listen to good music while developing a bond with their community members. Organizers are all volunteers and they ask for a $5 donation from attendees but this is honourary so as to not discourage anyone from attending. Children under the age of 15 are free.

Four years ago, a children and youth event was added to the May Coffee House as a way to encourage talented young individuals while helping to develop their love of music. A pet llama named Inca Warrior is also known to attend this event.

The Highlands Coffee House happens the second Saturday night of the month in the Caleb Pike House, 1589 Millstream Rd. Doors open at 7 p.m. and entertainment starts at 7:30 p.m. with an open mic portion kicking off each session.

Tea, coffee and goodies to munch on are also provided at no cost.
