A West Shore RCMP officer stepped up to play the role of caretaker for a toddler Tuesday night.

A call came in to the detachment from B.C. Ambulance at about 5 p.m. requesting assistance for a woman who was having a baby because the ambulance was quite a distance away, said West Shore RCMP Const. Alex Berube.

By the time the RCMP officer arrived at the location on Wale Road, fire department personnel were on scene and the woman was taken to hospital. The officer contacted a member of the woman’s family and took care of her other child until the family member arrived.

This is not the first time an officer has stepped into a caretaker role. Back in Novemeber officers cared for four young children after a daycare operator was taken to hospital.
