Runners invited to get set for the 40th annual Goodlife Marathon

More than 9,000 runners expected to pack Victoria streets in October

The 40th annual Goodlife Fitness Victoria Marathon is gathering runners to take the streets for a three-day race weekend in October.

Expect both jogging and relaxed striding from participants of all skill levels for the event. General manager Cathy Noel says she’s preparing for 8,000 to 9,000 runners this year.

There will be an option after registering to sign up for a Facebook group that offers clinics to prepare runners with training regiments leading up to the race.

Anybody can join, depending on the distance they’re comfortable with.

“Don’t do a marathon if you’re not ready for it,” Noel advises.

Entrants are invited to choose one or more of the 10 non-profit charity partners to make a pledge. A total of $1.85 million has been raised since the marathon began the pledge drive in 2006. This year, Noel is hoping to go over the $2 million mark.

Registrations are open for the marathon, half-marathon, 8k Road Race and the Thrifty Foods Kids run, all happening Oct. 13. Serious runners can use the marathon to qualify for the Boston Marathon.

The 8k run is changing its name to the Turkey Trot this year in time for Thanksgiving. There will be prizes and decorations during the course.

An expo will be held Oct. 11 and 12. “That’s like a trade show with all the sponsors and other exhibitors,” and is expected to draw 15,000 people this year she said.

Noel added 1,600 volunteers are needed for the event. Registrations for that are opening up soon.

Charities are also welcome to register before the March 15 deadline.

All participants will receive a New Balance garment, a finisher’s medal and certificate for participating.
