A new location and a few new ingredients come together to make the 14th Annual Chili Cook-Off the best one yet.

The event, which takes place Saturday, Sept. 8 from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., will be held at Belmont Secondary school for the first time, said Jenn Raappana, a member of the organizing committee for the Rotary Club of West Shore.

“We’re excited about the new location,” she said. “It should provide much more easily accessible parking. We’ve also teamed up with the West Shore Chamber of Commerce to add booths, displays and information on lots of local businesses and local organizations to make it more of a community event.”

“The West Shore Arts Council and West Shore Parks and Recreation are on board this year as well to provide family fun, entertainment and great activities for kids,” Raappana added.

The event is free, with chili tasting kits available for $7 per person for those who want to sample the large variety of chillies prepared by local teams and get in on the judging. Families of five can purchase tasting packages for $25. Eight teams from local restaurants and businesses have signed on for the competition so far.

Raappana thanked the event’s sponsors, Accent Refrigeration Systems, the City of Langford, Seacliff Properties, The South Island Home Team, the City of Colwood, Westshore Dental Centre and Belmont Residences for their generous support.

All proceeds from the event provide funding for the many projects and initiatives the Rotary Club of West Shore are involved with throughout the western communities.
