Nominations open for 2018 Cordova Bay Leadership Awards

Third annual awards gala will happen the week of Cordova Bay Day

Nominations are now being accepted for the third annual Cordova Bay Leadership Awards.

Recipients will be honoured at the annual gala in the week ahead of this year’s Cordova Bay Day, June 23.

After two successful years, the Cordova Bay Leadership Awards have been redesigned.

This year the Leadership Awards will recognize three individuals and one organization for their contribution to the community. It’s been a great start to the awards, said Larry Gontovnick, president of the Cordova Bay Association for Community Affairs, which partners with the Saanich News and other community organizations in delivering the awards.

“We’re simplifying it to recognize three individuals and one organization, and we’re not dividing it into categories,” Gontovnick said.

There will be posters, emails and announcements showing up in Cordova Bay over the next week or so, Gontovnick added.

The awards started with several categories, a great way to recognize the worthy individuals, some of them long overdue.

Rich McMorran’s passing is a perfect example of that, we are so thankful that we were able to recognize him,” Gontovnick said.

McMorran died in 2016, less than a year after the death of his brother Eric in 2015. The two were pillars of the community, having run the dance nights at McMorran’s Beach House, the social hub of Cordova Bay for decades.

The torch has been passed, and new generations are now emerging.

“We are proud the awards have been a success and are becoming a new tradition helping to connect those who make Cordova Bay a vibrant, close-knit neighbourhood where members put their time back into the community,” said Saanich News publisher Oliver Sommer.

The window for nominations closes May 14. To nominate a deserving member or organization from Cordova Bay, email cba.president@cbasn.com.
