International Day of the Girl Child

St. Margaret’s hosts community celebration in honour of girls

Educate a girl and she will share her knowledge with everyone she knows. Feed a girl, and she will feed and nurture everyone around her.

Empower a girl – she'll change the world.

So goes the reasoning behind Because I am a Girl, a Plan Canada campaign aimed at reducing global poverty through investing in girls that hits St. Margaret’s School on Thursday.

The girls’ school hosts the Because I am a Girl Speakers Bureau Oct. 11, for both school-based and an open community event in honour of the first ever International Day of the Girl Child, as designated by the United Nations.

During the in-school celebration, members of the bureau Adiba Hasnat, Julia Simac, Maneesa Sotheswaran and Alisha Talpur will explain how they helped launch International Day of the Girl Child.

Hasnat, Simac, Sotheswaran and Talpur will speak again at a presentation of mini-documentaries they have created on challenges girls face, both in Canada and internationally.

The documentary presentation and discussion runs from 7 to 8 p.m. in the St. Margaret’s Alexis Hall, 1080 Lucas Ave., and is open to the public.
