Looking for something fun to do this weekend to celebrate Earth Day?
Parks Canada and Fort Rodd Hill have you covered. The Colwood site is hosting several events this weekend, including a nature walk through beautiful blooming wildflowers.
In honour of national volunteer week, events kick off on Saturday, April 21 with discover volunteering sessions at 10 a.m. until noon and from 1 to 3 p.m. These sessions will give you a chance to get your hands dirty and help Parks Canada restore some of the rarest ecosystems in Canada at Fort Rodd Hill and Fisgard Lighthouse National Historic Sites by conquering its newest threat by pulling alien plant species. You can also dig for victory by planting native seedlings.
You can register for the morning session online here or for the afternoon session here.
On Sunday, which is also Earth Day, residents have a chance to get a behind-the-scenes tour with a gentle nature walk through beautiful blooming wildflowers. Join guest naturalists to learn more about local birds, edible and medicinal native plants, and sample a forest tea. Embrace the benefits of naturescaping with native plants and take home ideas for your own gardens.
The first nature walk goes at 10:30 a.m. to discover why Fort Rodd Hill and Fisgard Lighthouse National Historic Sites are “for the birds.” Later, at 2 p.m. residents can meet with a Parks Canada naturalist and renowned special guest Andy Mackinnon for a spring tour of the Garry Oak Learning Meadow.
