Megan Misovic has always dreamt of a connected bike trail system throughout Central Saanich for her family – and she is just starting to see the gears moving.

The Central Saanich woman uses her bike once or twice a week to get her kids to and from school and other extracurricular activities under good weather conditions. More often than not, she ends up biking on the road for certain sections around Keating Crossing Road, which she can easily navigate but the same couldn’t be said for her kids.

“My daughter is seven years old now, but as she grows up, I would be worried about her biking along there on her own,” Misovic said. “We should have trails for safe and active routes to schools.”

That’s where the South Vancouver Island Nature Trails Society fits into the picture.

They received a $3,000 cheque from the Tripleshot Cycling Club on Saturday, with funds from the fourth annual Tripleshot Crossfondo, Victoria’s only off-road cycling event that went through public and private properties in October.

One of the goals for the trails society is to work with public and private landowners to support the development of trails to Central Saanich schools.

Daniel Cammiade, executive director from the society, received the cheque at an event Saturday, with Central Saanich councillors Zeb King and Gord Newton, Tripleshot riders and coaches, and Misovic in attendance.

Cammiade thanked the club and board members, and said he looks forward to working with the Tripleshot Cycling Club and Central Saanich Community Association on a joint trail creation project that is coming down the pipeline.

This initiative will build upon the CRD’s “Ready, Set Roll” Active School Travel Planning that several Central Saanich schools are involved in.
