The pool at the Esquimalt Recreation Centre will be closed for two weeks for annual maintenance work.

From Dec. 2 to Dec. 17, the township will spend $80,000 to repair pumps, replace broken tiles, replace the filter in the lifestyle pool, fix the heater and broken wood in the sauna, as well as do significant work on one of the main pool filters.

“It’s all about upkeep and preventative maintenance,” said Jeff Byron, manager of recreation for the Township of Esquimalt. “We try to use slower periods when our attendance numbers are down.”

While full-time staff will continue to work, auxiliary lifeguards and swim instructors are off for two weeks, something Byron said helps many of them out since most are students going through exam periods.

For a proper send-off, the pool hosts its first Dog Swim, which users can register for online.

The Dog Swim run on the afternoon of Dec. 2 before the pool is shut down for a thorough clean.

“It’s definitely going to be a bit musty in there then,” Byron said with a laugh.

Rec-centre pass holders will still be able to access all the other amenities, as well as the Archie Browning Centre. Pass holders will also be able to attend any other recreation centre across Greater Victoria, as well as access the pool at CFB Esquimalt at a restricted schedule.

The two closest establishments are Crystal Pool and the Juan de Fuca Rec Centre.
