Recognized as a “Hero Among Us,” Country Grocer received the MS Society’s Division Award of Merit Thursday.

Honouring the company’s support for the society’s programs in Greater Victoria and throughout Vancouver Island, the Heroes Among Us award recognizes the outstanding contribution of a business in furthering the work of the MS Society on a provincial and/or regional basis.

“We are thrilled to be able to honour your longstanding commitment to improving the lives of those living with multiple sclerosis across Vancouver Island with this award. Your support of the MS Walks, the Self-Help Group Lunches and the First Friday Lunch Program has helped create memorable experiences for individuals affected by MS, their families and their friends,” the MS Society’s Ashley McCartie said following the presentation at the Royal Oak store.

“The quote ‘cooking with love provides food for the soul’ truly sums up the feeling Chef Michael (Williams) creates for the participants at First Friday Lunch. The nutritious food he creates provides an opportunity for people affected by MS to come together as a community to share a meal. His warm demeanor and passion for good food shines through in every meal he creates,” McCartie said.

Country Grocer Director Peter Cavin said he was honoured to accept the award on behalf of the Island-grown company. “Our relationship with the MS Society is very important to us.”
