To help raise awareness of tsunami safety and preparedness, Royal Roads University (RRU) and the City of Colwood are hosting the High Ground Hike.

The Thursday, April 17 event will give residents, students and community groups an opportunity to practise tsunami evacuation, alongside community representatives, including Mayor Doug Kobayashi.

Participants are invited to meet at the waterfront near the boathouse at RRU’s lower parking lot and take a self-guided walk up to the central parking area, following the evacuation path out of the tsunami zone.

"Like earthquake and fire drills, practicing what to do in a tsunami helps in the event of a real emergency," said a city spokesperson in a news release.

The hike will feature interactive booths with community representatives along the path who will be available to answer questions and suggest tips for emergency planning and tsunami preparedness.

Meeting people at high ground in the central parking area will be Colwood Fire Rescue.

The event will be held Thursday, April 17, from 10 to 11:30 a.m. It is open to all ages and on-leash pets. Parking is free for attendees during the event.
