Pruning workshop this Saturday in Colwood
Have you ever wanted to learn the ins and outs of pruning? Fruit Testers of B.C. is hosting its summer pruning party this Saturday, July 21 at the Royal Roads University orchard in Colwood. Taking place from 10 a.m. until noon, this workshop is open to the public and will teach summer pruning techniques for productivity and how to control tree size. Also on the agenda is a budding demonstration for those who want to learn more about propagating their own trees. Bring your secateurs for hands-on experience.
Once on campus, follow the signs to the Mews parking lot (pay parking) and the orchard is a short walk away near the walled garden. For more information go to bcfta.ca/events.
Volunteers needed to help restore local park
The Greater Victoria Green Team is looking for volunteers to help restore Murray Pond Park in Colwood. The team will be removing blackberries and other invasive species on Saturday from 9:30 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. The park is near Royal Bay Secondary and volunteers are asked to meet at the park entrance off of Latoria Boulevard and Ryder Hesjedal Way.
Tools and gloves will be provided if you don’t have your own.
Watch a movie under the stars at Fort Rodd Hill
For the first time, Parks Canada is hosting its first camp-in movie screening next week in Colwood. Taking place at the Fort Rodd Hill National Historic Site on Friday, July 27, this unique experience is a chance to also explore the grounds.
Instead of the typical drive-in movie experience, visitors can watch Indiana Jones Raiders of the Lost Ark on a big screen within the fort walls. But the adventure doesn’t have to end with the movie. Visitors can make it an overnight experience by bringing their own tent, renting one from Parks Canada, or spending the night in one of the oTENTiks.
Tent rental fees are $55 for a four-person tent or $70 for a six-person tent. The overnight fee for bringing your own tent is $17.60. The regular admission fee of $3.90 per person also applies. Youth and children under the age of 18 are free. Reservations are required for people wishing to spend the night. For more information, call 250-478-5849.
