Afternoon tea a royal affair

Queen Victoria would be pleased.

A Royal Victoria Day Tea for seniors planned for Sunday (May 22) will honour Queen Victoria's 192nd birthday, in a manner most fitting.

Victoria is said to have started the custom of enjoying afternoon tea.

"I bet she would be secretly, royally pleased she still has such a major influence on Canadians' lives 110 years after her death, even on the pleasures of afternoon tea," said Colleen Mills, chair of the Victoria branch of the non-profit Monarchist League of Canada, which advocates Canada's constitutional monarchy system of government.

The free public event will feature tea and crustless sandwiches as well as door prizes such as a DVD copy of the movie ••••••••••The King's Speech.

"There was so much attention to the Royal wedding so we though we'd host an event that focuses on the monarchy," said Ron Cain, enrichment co-ordinator of the Victorian at McKenzie Retirement Residence, which is co-organizing the celebration with Monarchist League members.

Participants are encouraged to wear their best hat.

"Queenly hats are preferred," Cain said. "White gloves are optional."

The event happens Sunday (May 22) from 3 to 4:30 p.m. at the Victorian At McKenzie Retirement Residence, at the corner of McKenzie Avenue and the Patricia Bay Highway. To reserve a place, please call 250-381-9496.
