OUT AND ABOUT: Opportunities for learning abound in coming days

Arts events among those planned on the West Shore.

I finally feel as though the cold weather is behind us, and I can handle a little bit of rain if it means we have no more snow in the forecast.

With the year well underway, the Sooke Region Chamber of Commerce welcomes Langford Mayor Stew Young as its guest speaker today (Jan. 25) for its Business Breakfast meeting from 7 to 9  a.m. at the Prestige Oceanfront Resort.

Silver Cross accessibility shop is having their grand opening this Saturday, Jan. 28 from 1 to 5 p.m. at their new location, 2657 Wilfert Rd. The Silver Cross Superstore will carry a full range of mobility products including stair lifts, porch lifts, accessible vans and aids to daily living. Drop by and celebrate with them and enjoy a free barbecue lunch, draw prizes and tours of their facility.

Also on Jan. 28 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., the City of Colwood is hosting its Big Ideas Fair at Royal Bay secondary, 3500 Ryder Hesjedal Way. This is a great opportunity to help shape your community. Not only can residents provide input on upcoming plans for the City, there will be fun activities for all ages, plus food, music and a bouncy castle for the kids.

Artist and art teacher Rebecca Barnard, a committee member with the Westshore Refugee Sponsorship Group, will be hosting fundraiser paint-in sessions, focusing on specific mediums for each. On Tuesday, Feb. 7 at 9:30 a.m. and Monday, Feb. 13 at 6:30 p.m., join Rebecca and follow a step-by-step method to paint a hibiscus flower. Register for the classes at the Church of the Advent office, weekdays from 9 a.m. to noon or by emailing bill@wrsg.ca. The proceeds will aid a family of five who are in Lebanon waiting to join other family members already in Victoria.

The Indigenous Perspectives Society is co-ordinating the creation of four button blankets featuring the West Coast images of Whale, Raven, Eagle and Wolf in a community reconciliation project in partnership with the Anglican Church. It is a great project to get involved in and represents an important step in the building of our future together. The blanket sessions happen Tuesday evenings at the Society building, 664 Granderson Rd. in Langford from 5 to 7 p.m. through the end of March. If you want to get a jump start on getting your preschoolers ready for school, join Sooke School District on Saturday (Jan. 25) for the Ready, Set, Learn events at Westshore Town Centre. The event happens from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., as well as from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Sooke Community Hall. This event is for three and four year olds and there will be goodie bags for participants.
