June started off with a superb event hosted by the Westshore Chamber of Commerce at Olympic View Golf Club, where four mayors and a former mayor gathered to answer questions from the community and our readers.
The questions related to everything from transportation woes to the never-ending sewage saga. The mayors were candid and relaxed and it was a pleasure to see how much respect and friendship there is among the five very distinct municipalities of the West Shore.
Over the next several weeks the Gazette will be bringing you some of the answers to those topics of most concern to our region.
Eagle Creek Village in View Royal had a Western-themed grand opening kick-off on Saturday. It was a huge success, with first-time visitors to the plaza joining regulars who have already made Eagle Creek part of their shopping routine.
The list of stores now open is broad and includes anchor Quality Foods, Dollar Tree, Cob’s Bread, Forbes IDA Pharmacy, Cascadia Liquor Store and Villages Pizza, plus other services; be sure and make a trip in to the Village.
Every Friday in Colwood through the summer, head to the beach for eats from local food trucks. The City is encouraging people to get out and about, be active and enjoy the fresh air and beautiful surroundings. The food vendors will be in a designated area near the welcome sign on Ocean Boulevard between 11 a.m. and 7 p.m. in June, July and August.
The Vancouver Island Sustainable Technology Association hosts its expo this Friday (June 17) at the Westin Bear Mountain Golf Resort and Spa, with the event running from 8 a.m. until 5:30 p.m.
Also on Friday, from 7 p.m until 9:15, the Metchosin Golf Course hosts the dance band The Kicks as part of the Bandwagon series. The kitchen and bar open at 5:30 p.m.; a donation of $5 at the door and any tips will go to the musicians.
On Saturday, the Royal Canadian Legion in Langford will host a fashion show and tea starting at 1:30 p.m. The show will feature fashions by Ava Gray, which will be available for sale afterwards. The Ladies Auxiliary will serve tea; tickets are $8 for adults and $5 for children. For more information call Trudine at 250-478-5484.
The second annual Langford Aboriginal Day Festival is happening June 21 at the M’akola Group building, 550 Goldstream Ave. Come for family activities, cultural performances, artists, food and much more. All events are free.
Langford Aboriginal Day, being held in conjunction with the official opening of the M’akola building, is a partnership between Indigenous Perspectives Society, M’akola Housing, Sooke Family Resources Society, Surrounded By Cedar Child and Family Services, NIL/TU,O Child and Family Services, Island Métis Family and Community Services, Hulitan Family and Community Services and School District 62.

And don’t miss a night of award-winning entertainers and fundraising on June 25 at Olympic View Golf Club. The Ladies of Jazz and Gospel, Maria Manna, Maureen Washington and April Gislason, are performing to help raise funds for the Westshore Refugee Sponsorship Group. The event, which also includes dinner and a silent auction, gets underway at 6 p.m. Tickets for this charity event are $100 each, book them at wrsg.ca.
