What do you do when your operation is already providing Greater Victoria with the most complete range of beauty services available in the city?

If you’re Anna Piloyan, owner of Deco De Mode, you expand. “Deco De Mode Sidney will be our newest shop and will be opening in January, in a great location right next to the new cinema,” Piloyan says.

In the works for more than a year, “our sticker is already up on the wall at the Camille Building (2469 Sidney Ave.) … but building permits, leasehold improvements and that sort of thing take time to complete.”

Deco De Mode describes itself as a beauty wonderland providing clients with a wide assortment of beauty, wellness and self-care services, including nailcare, Botox, facials, skincare, laser hair removal and other anti-aging solutions. The business’s original downtown location at 1016 Broad St. has been serving the community for years, with Piloyan acquiring it in late 2007.

Building on the services provided since opening, the downtown location’s expanding client base inspired her to offer her beauty-care options to a wider audience, leading to the launching of new outlets, beginning earlier this year with the opening of Deco De Mode West Shore, at 109 - 2849 Peatt Rd.

“West Shore is a boutique location that’s very unique for us as it’s only providing medi spa (skincare treatment) services, while the one in Sidney will be offering everything – a full-service outlet,” she says.

Another unique aspect of the Deco De Mode corporate community is that it has a sister operation, quite literally, in Toronto. “You could say it’s a family business as the Yorkville salon has been open for five years now and is owned by my sister. It’s not a franchise or anything, it’s a family business as the Toronto shop is run entirely by her but under the same Deco De Mode name,” Piloyan says.

With a staff of some 40 beauticians and aestheticians on hand, the ongoing expansion of Deco De Mode has been inspired as much by a need to keep her staff creatively satisfied as it was business growth. “We’ve been in business about 15 years now and we’ve grown together as a team, having grown and expanded our services as much for the benefit and interest of the staff as for the clients,” Piloyan says.

“Many of my staff have been with us a long time so the underlying reason for the growth is to not lose these people. We don’t want to get bored just doing the same thing over and over. As new services become available, we embrace them, allowing our staff the opportunity for continual improvement – which of course also benefits the customers.”
