The Warriors Basketball Club capped off an impressive season with a silver medal at a provincial tournament.

The players competed as part of a Vancouver Island Regional team at the tournament, which took place in Langley on May 27 and 28.

Eight of the 10 players on the team are Warriors, including Peyton Bains, Ella Scoville, Hanna Erickson, Sophie Bossi, Emily Barron, Halena Madison, Kate Brooks and Serena Zhang.

Katie Cornett from Ladysmith and Jenna Scott from Campbell River rounded out the roster for the U13 team.

Warriors coach Jason Barron credited a strong work ethic, plenty of practices and a consistent focus throughout the year for the team’s success.

“We use the off-season to work on individual game points like ball handling, shooting and defensive moves so that when Night League starts up in the fall we are ready to work as a team on our plays and our skills are sharp,” said Barron, the Warriors Night league coach.

“The dedication of this group of athletes and their commitment to the game and their teammates is strong.”

He said that although their was little time to prepare for the provincial tournament, the players worked hard to make the players from up-Island feel like part of the team.

“The team’s success and the good times they shared showed what a great bunch they are,” he added.

The silver medal added more accolades to the team’s outstanding season, which included and a division championship at the the Uvic Future Stars tournament in December, a first-place finish in the Victoria Night League U13 A division in February and a bronze medal at the B.C. Club Championships in March.

Another Warriors player, Dunsmuir Grade 8 student Maggie Fehr, was selected for the U15 provincial team as an underage player.

Fehr, almost six-feet-tall, will compete with Team B.C. at the national championships July 23 to 29 at the University of Regina.
