Results from Day 1 and 2 at the national club volleyball championships offered high hopes for the playoffs for the Victoria Volleyball Association’s Team Black.
The 17-under women’s Tier 1 side, more than half its roster Belmont secondary players, won six straight matches without a game loss before running into the tough Pakmen Club side from Mississauga, Ont. in the quarter-finals Sunday morning.
Team Black rebounded from a 25-21 loss in the opening set to convincingly win the next, 25-14. A thrilling deciding game went into extra points, with Pakmen earning a spot in the semifinals with a 16-14 victory.
B.C.’s other representative in the 17U women’s Tier 1 playoffs, Team Academy, the Vancouver team which beat VVA Black in the provincial final last month, won the gold medal with a 2-1 match win Sunday against the Storm Volleyball Lightning from the Toronto area. The Lightning beat Pakmen 2-0 in the semifinals, while Team Academy beat the Titans from Ontario 2-1.
Team Black went 3-0 on Friday to win their preliminary pool, then reeled off three more straight-set wins to place first in their power pool in Saturday action.
