Team B.C. took the lead during the female lacrosse national championships at Bear Mountain Arena this week (July 29 to Aug. 2).
By Wednesday (Aug. 1), the midget girls had won all six of their games, qualifying for the final round Thursday (Aug. 2).
The team faced Ontario yesterday.
Going into Thursday's game, head coach Pat Coyle of Coquitlam, said he's been happy with how the team has done so far, but he knows beating Ontario could be a challenge.
"We only beat them 2-1 last game (on Tuesday), so we know it's going to come down to one game," he said. "We're happy so far."
Coyle credits the "well-rounded" 20 member team for being strong in their abilities and staying focused during games.
"As much as we can, (we're focused on) a shift at a time, and not really focused on what's at stake," he said. "(We) just focus on what we do well."
Team B.C.'s midget team included three Island girls: captain Selena Lasota from Campbell River and West Shore girls, Laura Gosselin and goalie Talia Mavin.
Mavin usually plays against midget boys with the Juan de Fuca Lacrosse Association.
“It’s nice going into the tournament knowing you have such a solid goalie,” Coyle said of Mavin. "It's hard not to think going in we had a real leg up. She's a real steady, solid player."
The Team B.C. bantam team had also won their first six games by Wednesday morning, qualifying for finals on Thursday.
