JOCK TALK: Victoria Grizzlies hit the ice at home this weekend

West Shore hockey fans have a lot to cheer about this week.

The Victoria Grizzlies return home tonight (Sept. 29), hosting the Vernon Vipers at The Q Centre for a 7 p.m. puck drop.

Don’t be late to the game as pre-game festivities include a tailgate party and barbecue.

Next up, Saturday, Sept. 30, the Grizz host the Langley Rivermen at 7 p.m., also at The Q Centre.

The Westshore Wolves start the week with a local road trip, taking on the Saanich Braves tonight (Sept. 29) at 6:30 p.m. at Pearkes Arena.

The Wolves return home Wednesday, Oct. 4 when they host the Peninsula Panthers at 7 p.m. at The Q Centre. They then finish the week next Friday, Oct. 6, visiting the Peninsula Panthers at Panorama for a 7:30 p.m. start.

As the minor hockey season also ramps up, the Juan de Fuca Grizzlies Midget Tier 1 team follows a Port Alberni road trip with an in town game Sunday, Oct. 1, taking on the Saanich Braves at 9:30 a.m. at Pearkes Arena.

Rugby action takes the West Shore teams to Oak Bay’s Windsor Park for a series of games Saturday, Sept. 30.

The Premier women kick things off against the Castaway Wanderers at 11:15 a.m.

Next up, men’s Premier Reserve play pits Westshore 2 against Castaway Wanderers 2 at 12:45 p.m. followed by the two clubs’ Premier men hitting the pitch at 3 p.m.

In community sports, the Westcastle United men’s soccer team hosts the Gorge FC this Saturday, Sept. 30 at 8 p.m. at Westhills Stadium. Next up, Saturday, Oct. 7, they head to the University of Victoria to play Vic West FC at 8 p.m.

High school sports open for the week with Royal Bay’s senior boys soccer playing Lambrick Park on Tuesday, Oct. 3. Kick-off is at 3:30 p.m. at Tyndall Field.

Returning to their home turf Thursday, Oct. 5, the West Shore boys host Claremont at 3:45 p.m. at the school field.

On Wednesday, Oct. 4 the Royal Bay senior boys’ volleyball team will host Claremont, Reynolds and Belmont. The first game opens at 6 p.m. with Royal Bay deciding the sequence of the matches.

High school cross country takes West Shore runners to Henderson Park Thursday, Oct. 5 for the season’s second race.

The junior boys start at 3:45 p.m., with the junior and senior girls at 4 p.m., and senior boys starting at 4:05 p.m.
