JOCK TALK: The West Shore Rebels finally hit the turf in Langford

Lots of lacrosse, football, cricket and more on the West Shore this week

The Westshore Rebels finally bring football back to the region with their home opener this Saturday, Aug. 19. Kick-off is at 3 p.m. at Westhills Stadium when the team takes on the Langley Rams in what is sure to be an action-packed game.

From turf to track, this Saturday’s Night at the Races at Western Speedway will crown a champion for the late-model division, but the stock cars, mini stocks and Hornets will also be in action.

Come Wednesday, Aug. 23, the Hornet Series continues, with practice and grandstands opening at 5:30 p.m., qualifying at 6:30 p.m. and racing at 7 p.m. For more information and tickets, visit westernspeedway.net.

Finally hitting West Shore streets this Sunday, Aug. 20 is Ryder Hesjedal’s Tour de Victoria, a mass cycling event produced by the Ryder’s Cycling Society of Canada, a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting cycling.For more information about registration, routes and more, visit tourdevictoria.com.

From road to track, the West Shore velodrome plays host to the B.C. Track Cycling championships, Aug. 18 to 20. The event will feature team sprints, team pursuits, individual sprint tournaments and points races. Inspired by what you see? Those interested in giving track cycling a try are encouraged to participate in “Learn to Ride” sessions on Sundays throughout the month (except Aug. 20). Bike rentals are included in the $50 fee and no previous experience is necessary. For more information, visit gvva.bc.ca.

As the summer sports seasons wind down, local cricket action takes the West Shore’s Metchosin team to Windsor Park Sunday, Aug. 20 for a noon tilt against Oak Bay.

Victoria is hosting the 2017 Baseball Canada Men’s National Championships, featuring the top men’s baseball teams in Canada competing for the national championship.
