JOCK TALK: Big thrills keep coming at Western Speedway

The Daffodil Cup goes this weekend with a number of events

While a home game is still a few weeks away, get your football fix by following the Westshore Rebels over the Malahat this Saturday, Aug. 5 as they take on the Vancouver Island Raiders in Nanaimo at 2 p.m. If the drive isn’t for you but you still want to support local football, visit bcfctv.com to watch the game online.

Turning to lacrosse, with playoffs getting underway earlier this week, the Victoria Shamrocks host game 2 in their series with the Burnaby Lakers on Saturday, Aug. 5 at The Q Centre. Game 4 hits The Q Centre floor Wednesday, Aug. 9. Game time for both tilts is 6 p.m.

Continuing to deliver excitement, Western Speedway hosts the Daffodil Cup Weekend on Friday, Aug. 11 and Saturday, Aug. 12. The event includes winged sprint cars, sprint cars, the Old Timers Racing Association and dwarf cars. NSRA winged sprintcars highlight this all open wheel weekend, as they race for the coveted Daffodil Cup Trophy. Wilroc non-wing Sprint Cars will compete for the Roy Smith Memorial Trophy on Friday night, and the Ross Rocket Memorial Trophy on Saturday Night. Visit westernspeedway.net for more information.

West Shore ball hockey fans can now play year-round as Greater Victoria Minor Ball Hockey launches a new drop-in fall/winter ball hockey league. Running Sundays from Sept. 10 to Jan. 28 for players from throughout the region, times will be set aside for players between six and 18 years old (birth years 2011 to 1999). Participation in the hour-long drop-in sessions is $95 for the season – email registrar@vmbh.ca for information.

On Aug. 20, Ryder Hesjedal’s Tour de Victoria will pedal through the West Shore. The mass participation cycling event produced by the Ryder’s Cycling Society of Canada, a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting and supporting cycling across the country. While early bird specials have finished, you can still pay for any of the events until event day, with anyone under the age of 19 biking for free. The University of Victoria Cricket Club’s fundraiser is also this week, Monday, Aug. 7 at Beacon Hill Park. International cricket player and IPL coach Eric Simons comes to Victoria to host a three-hour bowling clinic and two-hour seminar. The bowling clinic runs from 3 to 6 p.m., costing $50 per club (Div. 1 only). Each club may send two bowlers. A seminar with Q-and-A session following runs from 7 to 9 p.m. and costs $20. Both events will take place at the Beacon Hill Park cricket ground.
