Canada’s men’s rugby sevens team was in Langford this week showing off their new hardware.

The team won their first-ever cup title on the HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series in Singapore on April 16. To do so they beat New Zealand – for only the second time ever – in the quarter-finals, England in the semifinals and U.S.A. in the gold medal match.

Just five years ago, Canada was not a core part in the series, which consists of the top 12 countries. Rugby Canada credited the support they’ve received from the City of Langford through partnerships, and the daily training environment at the Canadian Rugby Centre of Excellence, for aiding in their recent accomplishments.

Canada’s women’s team also won a tournament this year in Sydney, Australia.
